How Early to Arrive at Dublin Airport When Parking
Airlines and airports tell you when to be at the terminal. They do not tell you how long it takes to get from your parking space to the terminal door, and that is where most tight departures go wrong. Depending on where you park at Dublin Airport, the gap between switching off your engine and walking into departures ranges from two minutes to well over half an hour. This guide combines DAA's arrival advice with the real transfer time from every major car park, so you can work out exactly when to leave home.
DAA advises arriving at the terminal 2 hours before short-haul flights within Europe and 3 hours before long-haul flights, with more time if you are checking bags or travelling in a group. If you are parking, add your car park's transfer time on top: about 2 to 6 minutes on foot from the Short Term car parks, up to about 15 minutes from Express Red and up to about 30 minutes from Holiday Blue in the worst case.
On busy mornings, allow an extra margin for queues at the car park barrier and on the airport road. DAA itself advises allowing up to 40 minutes to park and transfer from Express Red.

How Early Should You Arrive at Dublin Airport If You Are Parking?
Work backwards in two steps. First, take DAA's terminal arrival time: 2 hours before a short-haul flight or 3 hours before a long-haul flight. Then subtract your car park's transfer time, plus a buffer for parking and queues. For most long-stay car parks, that means arriving at the car park 20 to 45 minutes before you want to be at the terminal.
Step 1: DAA's terminal arrival advice
| Flight type | Be at the terminal |
|---|---|
| Short-haul (within Europe) | 2 hours before departure |
| Long-haul (outside Europe) | 3 hours before departure |
| Checking bags or travelling in a group | Allow more time |
DAA also recommends checking your airline's check-in and bag drop opening times. Security at Terminal 1 operates 24 hours a day. Terminal 2 security opens in the early hours, from about 03:30 to 04:00 according to DAA's published guidance, so Terminal 2 passengers on the first flights should factor this in.
Step 2: Add your car park transfer
Transfer time is more than the bus journey. It includes the barrier, finding a space, unloading and walking to the shuttle stop, then the wait and the ride. The table below uses each operator's published frequency and journey time to give a realistic range.
How Long Do Dublin Airport Car Park Shuttles Take?
Shuttle rides take about 5 minutes from Express Red, about 6 minutes from Park2Travel, about 10 minutes from the Clayton Hotel and about 15 minutes from Holiday Blue. Add the wait for the next bus, which can be up to 10, 12, 30 or 15 minutes respectively.
| Car park | Frequency | Ride time | Bus stop to terminal: best to worst case | Suggested total allowance from car park entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short Term (T1 Blocks A, B, C; T2) | Walk | 2 to 6 min walk | 2 to 6 min | 15 min |
| Drop & Go (T1 Car Park C, T2 Level 3) | Walk after key handover | 2 min to T2, 5 to 7 min to T1 | 2 to 7 min | 15 min |
| Meet and greet | Handover at terminal | Short walk | Few minutes | 15 to 20 min (call 20 to 30 min ahead) |
| Express Red | Every 10 min | About 5 min | 5 to 15 min | 30 to 40 min (DAA: up to 40 min) |
| Park2Travel | Every 12 min, 24/7 | About 6 min | 6 to 18 min | 30 to 40 min |
| Holiday Blue | Every 15 min | About 15 min | 15 to 30 min | 40 to 50 min (DAA recommends allowing 30 min) |
| Clayton Hotel | Every 20 to 30 min, 24/7 | About 10 min | 10 to 40 min | 45 to 55 min |
| Crowne Plaza | Every 30 min, 24/7 (residents) | About 7 min drive | 7 to 37 min | 45 to 55 min |
| Metro Park and Ride | Scheduled, 04:00 to 23:45 | About 8 min | Depends on timetable | Check timetable |
| Premier Inn | Every 30 min, about 04:15 to 23:00 | Short drive | Up to about 40 min | 45 to 55 min |
| Newpark Park and Fly | Every 30 min | 10 to 12 min | 10 to 42 min | 50 to 60 min |
Frequencies and ride times from DAA and operators' published information. "Best to worst case" is our calculation: ride time alone (bus waiting) to ride time plus a full interval. The suggested allowance adds about 10 to 15 minutes for the barrier, parking and walking to the stop.
Two things stand out. First, frequency matters as much as distance: the Clayton's shuttle ride is shorter than Holiday Blue's, but its longer interval can make the total journey longer. Second, the difference between the closest and furthest long-stay options can exceed 30 minutes on a bad run, which is the difference between a relaxed morning and a missed bag drop.
Worked Example: Working Back from Your Flight
For a short-haul flight departing at 08:00, DAA's advice puts you at the terminal by 06:00. Working back from there:
| Where you park | Arrive at the car park by |
|---|---|
| Short Term or Drop & Go | 05:45 |
| Express Red or Park2Travel | 05:20 to 05:30 |
| Holiday Blue | 05:10 to 05:20 |
| Clayton, Crowne Plaza or Premier Inn | 05:05 to 05:15 (or stay the night before) |
For a long-haul flight at 11:00, the terminal target becomes 08:00, so each time above moves to around 07:05 to 07:45, with extra margin for the Terminal 2 morning peak. Add your drive time to the car park, and extra time for traffic on the M1 and M50 approach roads at peak hours.
Security Peaks and the Busiest Times
DAA identifies peak times at security as 05:00 to 08:00 in Terminal 1 for morning flights, and 05:00 to 12:00 in Terminal 2 for morning and early afternoon flights. Those windows overlap with the busiest car park arrivals, so queues at barriers and shuttle stops build at the same time as queues at security.
The busiest periods of the year are July and August, Irish school mid-term breaks, Christmas and bank holiday weekends. On those dates, add 15 to 30 minutes to every figure on this page, and book parking in advance, because drive-up spaces may not be available. See our guides to parking without a booking and Christmas and peak season parking.

What Time Do the Shuttles Run at Night?
DAA's Express Red and Holiday Blue shuttles, Park2Travel's shuttle and the Clayton, Maldron and Crowne Plaza shuttles run 24 hours a day. The Metro Hotel and Premier Inn shuttles do not run overnight, so check their first and last departures for very early or very late flights.
- Older DAA guidance lists Express Red departures every 20 minutes between 01:00 and 04:00, and no service on Christmas Day. Allow more time overnight and over Christmas.
- Metro Park and Ride runs from about 04:00 to 23:45.
- Premier Inn runs from about 04:15 to 23:00.
- If you land after the last scheduled shuttle, arrange an alternative transfer in advance.
Returning: Allow Time on the Way Home Too
The return journey has its own timings. After landing, allow time for passport control and baggage reclaim before calling meet and greet operators or walking to the shuttle stop. Long-stay shuttles collect from Zones 8 and 9 of the Terminal 1 Bus Park, about a two to four minute walk from Terminal 1 Arrivals, and from Zone 21 at Terminal 2. Park2Travel collects only from Zone 9 at Terminal 1, and most hotel shuttles use the Coach Park at Zone 16. For car-park-specific detail, see our guides to Express Red, Holiday Blue and Park2Travel.
How to Save Time on the Day
- Check in online and use bag drop rather than full check-in where your airline allows it.
- Pre-book parking so the barrier reads your plate, and avoid the drive-up queue.
- Note your zone and bus stop number before walking away from the car.
- Choose a closer car park for early flights: Express Red, Park2Travel or Drop & Go cut the transfer substantially compared with Holiday Blue or 30-minute hotel shuttles.
- Stay the night before for very early departures if you live a long drive away. See our guide to Dublin Airport hotel parking.
